The Appalachian Trail: 10 Things You May Not Know
2 sessions • 5 hours

The Appalachian Trail (AT) may very well be America’s most famous footpath, and it travels right through Frederick County! Explore the history of the Appalachian Trail and understand why and how it has become a hiking phenomenon today. With a fun and quirky culture surrounding it, the trail offers up an opportunity to dive into some unique, fun facts. For the first session, we will meet in the classroom. The second session will be a trip to the Appalachian Trail for a one-mile hike to see some iconic sights on this famous footpath.

Second Session Notes:
• Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and prepare to walk on rocky, uneven surfaces with a small climb.
• FCC will provide transportation from campus to the trail and back to campus. Allow approximately 4 hours for the experience, from departure to return to campus.

Instructor: Tara Gettig worked as an educator for Pennsylvania State Parks where she developed and facilitated programs and taught geography at Shippensburg University. Sharing her love of outdoor recreation is a passion. In her free time, she has organized hikes for women, families and kids. Tara is particularly passionate about the Appalachian Trail and has hiked 900 miles of it. You can often find her on the trails of Frederick County with her husband and 2 children.
