NEW! Energy & Environmental Balance: It’s Not Easy Being Green

NEW! Energy & Environmental Balance: It’s Not Easy Being Green
6 sessions, 12 hours

How did we get here? What do we do? Since the industrial revolution, we have been dealing with the social ramifications of the growth of technology. Beginning at that point of history, we will explore the industrialization of the world along with the growth of electric power, and its impact on the environment. An overview of industrialization through the 20th century and legal responses to its environmental impact will be presented. The establishment of the EPA and its meshing with industry along with DOE’s involvement are part of that history. The parallel application of natural principles created systems and equipment to deal with air pollution. We will learn about electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, and wet and dry scrubbers in simple terms so that all can understand. While science is the background, we will be focused on social, economic, and environmental impacts of our production of electrical energy.

Instructor:  Mark Sankey has over 40 years of experience in industrial air pollution control. While he worked for Bechtel Power as a technical specialist in pollution control technology, he was afforded the opportunity to be involved with Engineers Without Borders. That led to two trips to Uganda focusing on villages needing better access to clean water and included a meeting with the vice-president of Uganda. Mark has written several papers, presented at energy industry conferences, and is published in an energy periodical. He also had the enviable opportunity to teach chemistry to high school juniors for a year in central New Jersey. Mark’s background has prepared him to provide a high-level perspective on the environmentally sound use of solid and fossil fuels. His adventure continues with this opportunity at ILR to promote and educate the public on the responsible use of all available sources of electric power.
