MWT – What If? Robots

Peter Warren Singer: is an American political scientist, international relations scholar and a preeminent specialist on 21st century warfare. He is currently Strategist and Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation. He has been named by the Smithsonian Institution-National Portrait Gallery as one of the 100 “leading innovators in the nation,” by Defense News as one of the 100 most influential people in defense issues, by Onalytica social media data analysis as one of the ten most influential voices in the world on cybersecurity, and by Foreign Policy as one of their Top 100 Global Thinkers List.

Singer is the author of multiple award-winning books. His book, Wired for War, examines how the US military has been, in the words of a recent US Navy recruiting ad, “working hard to get soldiers off the front lines” and replacing humans with machines for bombing, flying and spying. His research and analysis offer an eye-opening take on what the 21st century holds for war and foreign policy.

Is our generation going to make the same mistake that a past generation did with atomic weaponry, and not deal with the issues that surround it until Pandora’s box is already opened up?

Daniel Suarez: is a novelist who spins dystopian tales of the future. But on the TEDGlobal stage, he talks us through a real-life scenario we all need to know more about: the rise of autonomous robotic weapons of war. Advanced drones, automated weapons and AI-powered intelligence-gathering tools, he suggests, could take the decision to make war out of the hands of humans.
